The advice you hear most often from other creatives is that you must create every day. As a website designer and graphic designer, I get that. Be consistent. And, the man tells you to post consistently — you must feed the monster.

Houston Graphic Designer on the Integrity of Your Creative Work

There is truth in that about creative work — practice matters, repetition builds skill, and showing up when you do not feel like it is part of the work.

I believe that consistency is not only about frequency. It is about integrity. It is about sharing something worth sharing, even if that means sharing less often — but with more substance.

The Pressure of the Machine

We live in a culture that craves excess. More posts, more reels, more content, more work. The algorithm favors frequency. The feed moves fast, you need to keep up. The pressure to produce is constant.

The simple act of being busy does not necessarily mean you are being productive. I've made things quickly and moved on to the next project, it's just what you have to do when working in a fast-paced environment. Some of it was good. A lot of it was noise and felt rushed to me.

You have to stop and take a moment to ask yourself: What am I making it for? Is it going to elevate my brand?

Depth Over Volume

A creative practice that lasts is not built on how much you can produce or fast you can produce it. It is built on curiosity — a willingness to develop an idea without taking the easy route, to take your time to perfect it until it becomes what it is meant to be.

This practice takes time. It takes patience. Dedicating time to the work and nurturing yourself and your creativity. Its ok if some weeks you produce very little — it just means the work is happening and the creativity is cultivating.

What Sustains It

What has sustained my practice over the years is honest interest in what I am creating. Staying curious about learning. Community — wisdom from other creatives whose work inspires me. Finding solutions to the problem. Caring about the quality of what I put into the world.

And, taking the time to rest while working is not wasted time. Its in those quiet moments when creativity is forming.

Make an appearance. With something worth sharing. Quality over quantity is the best practice.

If you are curious about the work that has come out of this kind of intentional practice, take a look at my portfolio.
