Houston Graphic Designer, Creative, & Maker on the Joy of Handmade Crafts

My creative life has always been intertwined and wonderfully so — combining graphic design, arts and crafts, and product design. A maker’s quiet joy is in getting lost in the process of creating something entirely by hand and losing track of time as ideas slowly come to life. Whether I’m creating from scratch, repurposing vintage items, or upcycling simple materials, I enjoy bringing a fresh perspective to everyday things. I love wandering through local craft stores and antique shops, always keeping an eye out for unique new finds and inspiration. This year for Halloween, I wanted to make a posh and unique piece of seasonal decor for my own home: a handmade goth-inspired Halloween wreath.

Inspired by Goth Underground Culture

This project was inspired by the rich aesthetics of goth underground culture — blending its dark mood, romantic elegance, and punk influence into a dramatic floral centerpiece.

Crafting the Wicked Halloween Wreath

To bring this little wicked wreath arrangement together, I gathered a curated selection of crafting elements that I purchased from Michaels:

  • 1 Black Tree Branch Wreath
  • 1 Black Velvet Bow
  • 3 Black Roses
  • 3 Black Pumpkins
  • 3 Spiders
  • 1 Stem of Black Feathers
  • 1 Roll of 22 Gauge Black Paddle Wire

I began by thoughtfully arranging each unique element across the black tree branch wreath frame. Once the composition aligned with the dark moody aesthetic I envisioned, I trimmed the stems down and securely fastened the bow, roses, pumpkins, spiders, and feathers onto the wreath structure using the black paddle wire.

The final piece came together as I had envisioned it, a one-of-a-kind, handmade and wonderfully dramatic statement piece that brings a rich, textured blend of gothic romance and seasonal whimsy charm.

A One-of-a-Kind Seasonal Keepsake

This piece was a personal project made for my home and is not available for sale. Creating strictly for my own space brings a unique kind of creative freedom and happiness — no production deadlines, or market expectations, just for fun. It allows the process to remain an authentic, peaceful expression of love for the craft. Perhaps one day I will design and release a full collection of handcrafted home decor to share with others, but for now, this wreath remains a cherished labor of love for my family to enjoy.

Happy Halloween!

I hope this project inspires you to grab your favorite arts & crafts supplies from Michaels and create something magical. Their crafting community allows makers to share creative ideas, and celebrate handmade art together. Share your handmade creations with #MakeItWithMichaels
