CUBA, CELEBRATING NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

To celebrate national Hispanic heritage month this year I decided to create the La Cubana stamp collection and to write and share interesting and fun facts about Cuba. When I was a little girl I remember my parents receiving letters and postcards from our family in Cuba, we always looked forward to reading their letters and I always enjoyed looking at the postcards and postage stamps.

Here are a few interesting and fun facts about Cuba;

Cubans are Spanish European decent.
Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
Cuba has beautiful beaches and coastlines.
Cuba was one of the largest exporters of cane sugar.
Cuban cigars are known to be the finest in the world.
Baseball and dominos are the favorite pastime of the Cuban people.
Cuba is the home of the world’s smallest bird called the bee hummingbird.
Ballet, rumba, mambo and cha cha cha dances originated in Cuba.
Cubans love their coffee, “cafecito”, strong and their Cuban “pastelitos” sweet.

The La Cubana project was inspired by the beauty and strength of the Cuban woman, the Cuban culture and nostalgia of Cuba’s 1950’s vintage and cultural fashion.

The stamps I created feature seven Cubana doll illustrations, each one dressed in Cuban inspired fashions from the 1950’s era, traditional folk skirts, rumba dancer outfits, beautiful Spanish botanical fan headwear adorned with hibiscus flower similar to the Chinese hibiscus that is native to Cuba and 1950’s and Cuban fedora hats inspired and worn by Cuban women throughout history.

I used bold red and blue colors from the Cuban flag to create one cohesive and aesthetically pleasing color palette. I created the illustration in Adobe illustrator using simple shapes to mold the dolls, clothing designs, flowers and stamps.

The La Cubana illustrations are available for purchase from my Handmade shop, you can purchase one or all of these pretty little Cuban dolls.
